Definition of TSH Test:

TSH stands for thyroid stimulating hormone . A TSH test is a blood test that measures this hormone. TSH levels that are too high or too low may be a sign of a thyroid problem. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in the front of your neck. A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test measures the amount of TSH in the blood.

TSH is produced by the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of your brain. It’s responsible for regulating the amount of hormones released by the thyroid. It can tell if you have hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) in your blood.

Our Healthcare Lab Experts can help you understand the detailed parameters of the TSH Test.

TSH Test Normal Range:

TSH normal values are 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/L. A value above the normal range usually indicates that the thyroid is underactive. This indicates hypothyroidism. A value above the normal range usually indicates that the thyroid is underactive. This indicates hypothyroidism.

When the thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones, the pituitary gland releases more TSH to try to stimulate it. A value below the normal range means that the thyroid is overactive. This indicates hyperthyroidism . When the thyroid is producing too many hormones, the pituitary gland releases less TSH .

Depending on the results, your doctor may want to perform additional tests to confirm the diagnosis which may include, T3 Test and T4 Test. Having an overactive or underactive thyroid can cause health issues that interfere with a person’s daily life. During pregnancy , unusually high or low can lead to complications.
