Understanding Kidney Function Tests — Normal vs. Abnormal Parameters

What a Kidney Function Test Actually Measures

Your kidneys filter waste from the blood, regulate electrolyte balance, and produce hormones essential for blood pressure control and red blood cell production. When kidney function is compromised, it can lead to serious health issues — which is why understanding kidney function tests (KFT) matters, whether you’re monitoring a known condition or just staying ahead of one.

A KFT panel is a series of blood and urine tests that together show how effectively your kidneys are filtering waste and maintaining balance in your body. The most common components are serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urinalysis, and electrolyte levels.

1. Serum Creatinine

Creatinine is a waste product from muscle metabolism, normally filtered out by healthy kidneys. Normal range: Men 0.74–1.35 mg/dL, Women 0.59–1.04 mg/dL. Elevated levels can indicate impaired kidney function, though muscle mass and diet can also influence the number.

2. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)

BUN measures nitrogen from urea, a waste product of protein metabolism. Normal range: 7–20 mg/dL. High BUN may suggest kidney dysfunction, dehydration, or increased protein breakdown; low BUN can point to liver disease or malnutrition.

3. Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)

GFR estimates how well your kidneys filter blood — a GFR of 90 mL/min or higher is normal, while values below 60 mL/min may indicate chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD stages run from mild impairment (stage 1) to kidney failure (stage 5).

4. Urinalysis

Checks the physical, chemical, and microscopic properties of urine. Normal ranges: pH 4.5–8.0, protein 0–20 mg/dL, glucose and blood negative. Protein, blood, or glucose in urine can point to kidney disease, UTIs, or diabetes.

5. Electrolyte Levels

Sodium (135–145 mEq/L), potassium (3.5–5.0 mEq/L), calcium (8.5–10.2 mg/dL), and phosphate (2.5–4.5 mg/dL) are all regulated by the kidneys. High potassium in particular can be life-threatening and is often tied to kidney dysfunction.

What Abnormal Results Usually Mean

Abnormal creatinine or GFR can be an early sign of kidney disease — catching it early allows for management before it progresses. Because kidney disease is closely linked to cardiovascular health, abnormal electrolytes (especially potassium) can also raise heart-related risk. If results come back abnormal, your doctor may recommend imaging or a kidney biopsy to pin down the cause.

Supporting Kidney Health

  • Stay hydrated to help kidneys flush out waste
  • Monitor protein intake — high-protein diets add extra strain
  • Keep blood pressure in check
  • Manage blood sugar if you have diabetes
  • Avoid excess use of NSAIDs and other over-the-counter painkillers
  • Get routine KFT checkups, especially with risk factors like diabetes or hypertension

Frequently Asked Questions

Healthy adults can test every 2–3 years. With diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease, your doctor may recommend annual or more frequent testing.

Fasting for 8–10 hours is generally recommended for the most accurate creatinine and BUN results.

Yes — hydration levels, diet, muscle mass, and certain medications can all influence results, which is why your doctor interprets them alongside your overall health picture.
