Who Should Be Tested for Diabetes?

Diabetes is the most common disease that is found in every ¾ of every Indian household, it occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. What is normal blood sugar? Before getting into this question let’s know what are the types of blood sugar, basically, there are two main types of diabetes:

  • Type1 Diabetes
  • Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 is a chronic disease that is auto-immune and is usually detected in kids. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed in adults when the body becomes insulin resistant, in which your fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond correctly to insulin. Now, you what be wondering what can be the signs of diabetes. Early signs can be, extreme thirst, increased hunger, blurred vision, frequent urination, tingling of hands and feet, and unintentional weight loss this were a few of the low blood sugar symptoms of diabetes. If not treated might lead to diabetic neuropathy, in which the nerves are damaged due to high blood sugar levels. If still not rectified might lead to diabetic ulcers. If your family line has been diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol level, overweight, or high blood pressure might be at a high risk of getting diabetes. If you fall under any of the categories you need to do a diabetic test and your professional healthcare provider will let you know how often to check your blood sugar level. There are many types of tests that can help to check the level of blood sugar.

Diabetes – Diagnosis and Treatment

In number one comes, A1C in which your blood sugar should not cross 6.5%, it shows how the blood sugar has averaged in the last 3 months, fasting is not required for this testing, Fasting plasma glucose(FPG) in which fasting is required as we can see from the name, in which is the blood sugar level must be less than 126mg/dL, Oral glucose tolerance test is two hour testing which fasting is required and sugar level must be less than 200mg/Dl and for this, you need to drink a special sugary drink to see how well the body processes the sugar and last but not the least is the random(or casual) plasma glucose which only the diabetes patients can do.

If you have Type 1 diabetes you need to take insulin. There are different types of insulin, namely, rapid-acting/ultra rapid-acting, rapid acting, inhaled, regular (also called short-acting), intermediate-acting, long-acting, ultra long-acting are some of the ways to test insulin levels. Type 2 diabetic people can control their blood glucose level by changing their lifestyle to a healthier one by consuming healthier drinks and foods, and limiting calories if overweight. In Type 2 diabetes cases medicines are the best way to control the blood sugar level. A continuous glucose monitor(CGM) is used to check blood sugar levels every few minutes this is used by people who have Type 1 diabetes. A sensor will be put under the skin which can be implanted nowadays.
